<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Teaching sight words can be tricky. If students are not seeing these words again, and again, and AGAIN, then they will not learn them. They need to constantly see the word, read it and write it to help them become fluent. Here are some fun activities I do in my classroom to have my students practice sight words. Each of these activities can be used multiple times to practice all sight words. They are used frequently throughout the school year. Some of the activities can also be used for homework! </span><br />

You can choose which words to include in each book and how many sight words you would like to include. Students stamp the sight word, write it, and highlight the word by reading a sentence. My students like doing these during centers.</span></div>

Themes help out great with getting children excited about learning! I enjoy teaching maps mainly because I use a pirate theme to get the kids excited about learning! I begin the unit by telling the children that we are going to pretend to be pirates for the next few weeks. We read books that include pirates and books that teach us about the properties of maps and their various uses. Here are some great picture books I use:</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Play-doh mats are great for tactile learning! I use them often in my kindergarten classroom and my students love them! My district requires kindergartners to learn 75 sight words by the end of the year. This is a large amount of words that requires LOTS of practice! To help them learn these words, I incorporate many sight word activities throughout my centers each week to prevent sight word instruction from getting boring. I have found that my students love the following activities that you can find in my TPT store.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We have been working on our addition skills! There are many fun partner activities that I have had my students do to help strengthen their addition skills and increase their fluency. Here are some of the activities we have done:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkJfikbTvDz_tt0_KZczoaVMngzDgQ2csPWP2hKTSz4OlnnRQChoADhjaz-GS8ph7xPQzmUz0YC9pr8JqVLKsbWuEsnoFKI2x0WzCbYunD49RJIrWib6dHGjN2Ws3PODEn917isdUBHdM/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkJfikbTvDz_tt0_KZczoaVMngzDgQ2csPWP2hKTSz4OlnnRQChoADhjaz-GS8ph7xPQzmUz0YC9pr8JqVLKsbWuEsnoFKI2x0WzCbYunD49RJIrWib6dHGjN2Ws3PODEn917isdUBHdM/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Addition Plates</b>: I got these from the dollar store. They are a great way to help students visualize addition and to have them use manipulatives to solve. Children take turns rolling a die. They place a set of cubes for each number in the two smaller portions on the plate. Their partner writes the number sentence. The children solve the problem by placing both sets of cubes in the large part of the plate.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Addition Play-Doh Mats</b>: This is great for a center or RTI! Have children use play-doh to complete each addition mat. You can also place each mat in a dry erase sleeve. In the picture above, I was working with a student for RTI. These mats help children visualize addition and solve problems on their own. You can find these in my store: <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Addition-and-Subtraction-Play-Doh-Mats-1793243" target="_blank">Addition and Subtraction Play-Doh Mats</a></span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Making 10:</b> Children work with a partner and use ten frames to find out how many more they need to make 10. They use a dry erase board to write number sentences.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Other addition activities I used came from Miss Ricca's blog. She has many great and FREE activities that you can find here: <a href="http://mrsriccaskindergarten.blogspot.com/2013/04/fun-with-addition-freebies.html" target="_blank">Miss Ricca's Addition Activities</a> .</span><br />

My kids love this unit and are fascinated with space! We read many nonfiction books including "What the Moon is Like" by Franklyn Branley. This book does a great job teaching facts about the moon. It also nicely explains how the Earth and moon are alike and different.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5v7nKJd2c4QjqdfpT-Zw94-adtz2oI7GhBbX20tQMTezDT5Wq7qIoTIsNeHeZzqE-QEg9-QUsV0Mcwzmh9k2tVH0T_JtP_ipE8Eu0C7jym3gJp9P65TlpDHVDLBvb7qdnVgDooH9xNBs/s1600/the+moon_book.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5v7nKJd2c4QjqdfpT-Zw94-adtz2oI7GhBbX20tQMTezDT5Wq7qIoTIsNeHeZzqE-QEg9-QUsV0Mcwzmh9k2tVH0T_JtP_ipE8Eu0C7jym3gJp9P65TlpDHVDLBvb7qdnVgDooH9xNBs/s1600/the+moon_book.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After reading, we used a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the Earth and moon. I had the children write the facts on sentence strips to create a class Venn Diagram that can be displayed and referred back to.</span><br />

They have so much fun reading the sight words on the fish and catching them with their fishing rod. This activity creates an interactive literacy center and can be used again and again with different words! Here is how I use it in my classroom:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I tie a piece of yarn to a wooden block. I attach a magnet to the yarn.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I folded the construction paper into a trifold. I placed their picture on the first flap and a poem on the third flap. How about irregular ten frames? I use both standard and irregular ten frames and have seen so much growth in my students' number sense. Irregular ten frames require higher level thinking and promote children to develop their own strategies to count. I want to share how I use irregular ten frames in my classroom.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEZzvRbUtb4byengCNJmHYIrRfcq0tRqp_B2mqc7HoVzu9rczaE7LpcAMo3jnpSWAoUjfsG_oQbhJ0DeN3byv_e0lVNa4NtuJjFCwl0-H6Es0Us84yRSZn2sc-skfQ0ppOCyDjZWD-lHY/s1600/photo+(13).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEZzvRbUtb4byengCNJmHYIrRfcq0tRqp_B2mqc7HoVzu9rczaE7LpcAMo3jnpSWAoUjfsG_oQbhJ0DeN3byv_e0lVNa4NtuJjFCwl0-H6Es0Us84yRSZn2sc-skfQ0ppOCyDjZWD-lHY/s1600/photo+(13).JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I begin each math lesson with a number talk. For each number talk I choose two irregular ten frames. I draw the frames on chart paper and cover them up so the children cannot see the ten frames. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgV1jF09AhSOhHooI2s1vIwNJ_Fr4Rttn24zo6lqdI5SDkITb2BWs5IRU2b42SGT5hffp_65r8F3fJwLR3N7b12Igb2tXunHqa9-T5oU0cLixX4l5T_XaeEA8AEDU-AxRtogYyZAmkJaXs/s1600/photo+(14).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgV1jF09AhSOhHooI2s1vIwNJ_Fr4Rttn24zo6lqdI5SDkITb2BWs5IRU2b42SGT5hffp_65r8F3fJwLR3N7b12Igb2tXunHqa9-T5oU0cLixX4l5T_XaeEA8AEDU-AxRtogYyZAmkJaXs/s1600/photo+(14).JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I flash the first ten frame for about five seconds. The children have to count the dots as quickly as they can. If they know the amount of dots, they give me a thumbs up right below their chin. I flash the ten frame once more to give the kids another chance at counting. Then, I ask some of the children the number they counted. I choose two children who counted correctly to share their strategy for each ten frame. I record their strategies on chart paper. We compare and contrast the different strategies shared.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPOmnZt7cCWBgwQHCAXXFZcOt8VDcMvy5nzFBRxf2Dmrb_Y-u6M0aNlAP13W6GDA5IqvaYImSQ5x_h_DhD_hKmK51th1NnzCeafvvJ-MBddMR-px-TcqipS5O_iYd1hlTC-JUTPXki0yo/s1600/photo+(15).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPOmnZt7cCWBgwQHCAXXFZcOt8VDcMvy5nzFBRxf2Dmrb_Y-u6M0aNlAP13W6GDA5IqvaYImSQ5x_h_DhD_hKmK51th1NnzCeafvvJ-MBddMR-px-TcqipS5O_iYd1hlTC-JUTPXki0yo/s1600/photo+(15).JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As I do more number talks in my classroom, I have seen my students' critical thinking expand and number sense strengthen. They begin to group the dots in ways that make them easier to count (foundation for addition). They no longer count the dots one by one. Some children are even moving the dots in their head to make them easier and faster to count.</span><br />

I hope you enjoyed your winter break and had a great holiday! I wanted to share this anchor chart we made before break. The gingerbread unit I taught is my favorite to teach! There are so many rich gingerbread literature that my students LOVE! It is a great unit to identify story elements and compare and contrast stories.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We focused on three stories: "The Gingerbread Boy," "The Gingerbread Girl" (my favorite!), and "The Gingerbread Cowboy." We analyzed the main character, setting, problem, solution, and how each story ended. Above the anchor chart you can see the cute gingerbread boys/girls my students made! They used shapes to make their gingerbread and recorded how many of each shape they used! This was a fun unit that my students really enjoyed! They were very engaged in each story and couldn't wait to find out how each story ended!</span><br />

As we all know, the more they see them, the faster they will learn them. I made sight word mini-books to help my students learn their sight words in a fun way.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For each sight word, they have to stamp it, write it using rainbow colors, and highlight it in a sentence. They also have to use their decoding skills to read the sentence on each page. </span><br />

We began by learning the treasure reading can provide us with and the value there is in learning to read. On the first day of reading workshop, we read "Reading Makes You Feel Good" by Todd Parr. I love this book because it is a simple way to teach children how fun reading can really be! We also made an anchor chart of all the things we see people read.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs4HeeaV-ib52hooKprx9k9N9e28e7_DR5QpEc_6c0fiBXyd3N-bmZmQl11M9h9Qvlod-6MKCmsd9TbdEtW3cAE-4Bw7fEuNJGS-FP0Vd-_PIrom3kgsYRSpPtjvA0DPKxlICu2sHvfAs/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs4HeeaV-ib52hooKprx9k9N9e28e7_DR5QpEc_6c0fiBXyd3N-bmZmQl11M9h9Qvlod-6MKCmsd9TbdEtW3cAE-4Bw7fEuNJGS-FP0Vd-_PIrom3kgsYRSpPtjvA0DPKxlICu2sHvfAs/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This week the children have been learning how reading time is <span style="color: red;"><b>URGENT</b></span>! Readers cannot waste any time when reading and have to get started right away! They use every minute to increase their <b><span style="color: #3d85c6;">STAMINA</span></b>! I like to compare reading urgently to the way firefighters act when there is a fire or when we have a fire drill. We made the following anchor chart:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH81-tQAAVr6tDf1-jIh11nIwParREW4_t4Y8MJR1TcTz3er7YSWWnYek3Nkqq0Cju2Z60uLLu_2kBKga4fZlsZdWZeE39UqMLbX9MsdZMYUzLBxClTrTblsn-vtd6yKKpoIXJ14umYAs/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH81-tQAAVr6tDf1-jIh11nIwParREW4_t4Y8MJR1TcTz3er7YSWWnYek3Nkqq0Cju2Z60uLLu_2kBKga4fZlsZdWZeE39UqMLbX9MsdZMYUzLBxClTrTblsn-vtd6yKKpoIXJ14umYAs/s1600/Slide2.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This week we also discussed read to self. I modeled what real reading looks like and what fake reading looks like. The kids always love when I fake read...I make it really dramatic! Then, I had a few children model both ways to read so they get a good idea of what real reading looks like! We made this read to self anchor chart. We will refer back to it often.</span></div>
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The children also got their "bag of books" this week! Each child got 5 books that are at their reading level. (They love having their own books to read!) They read these during read to self. When they learn how to pick "just right books" on their own, then they will choose their own books to read.</span><br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I teach a new reading workshop lesson every day to teach my students the expectations of reading workshop and how to silently read on their own. Throughout the lessons I will also teach them how to engage in 10 other centers. This will teach my students how to engage in activities independently giving me the ability to work with guided reading groups. Whenever they are using it, they are very engaged. Working with play-doh also helps develop my students' fine motor skills. I made number play-doh mats to build my students' number sense and increase their number recognition. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglFYeSKBwUhD2X7HWan27V_3k8HZAlOiS0p0z3quxYn-rD8QrUD4pC9tMCSl7UpPgSaoK8vSZfzBr5JxNzd_OUTS-BoeldOyaicvhaqXufjm7qtGbXKE53v6j4j7oqT79bIBgnYWvs-kA/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglFYeSKBwUhD2X7HWan27V_3k8HZAlOiS0p0z3quxYn-rD8QrUD4pC9tMCSl7UpPgSaoK8vSZfzBr5JxNzd_OUTS-BoeldOyaicvhaqXufjm7qtGbXKE53v6j4j7oqT79bIBgnYWvs-kA/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I like these mats because they have the children work on writing the number with a dry erase marker and creating the number with play-doh. </span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The children also have to show the number in a ten frame. Each mat provides them with a lot of number practice! A great book to teach this important concept is "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" by Carol McCloud. This book is absolutely wonderful and is great for children ages preschool to fifth. It explains how everyone has an invisible bucket. You fill people's buckets when you are nice to them and do nice things. However, you can dip into people's buckets if you are not kind. I was reading this book to my kindergarteners and a child asked, "Is that real? Do people really have invisible buckets?" </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Here is the anchor chart we made:</span><br />

I created play-doh mats for each of my students that contained their name template. Each child used play-doh to make their name. I showed them how to roll the play-doh like a snake to make it easier to form. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">When finished, I had each of my students show their creations to the class and shared their name. This turned out to be a fun get to know you activity as well as practice for learning how to spell our own names!</span>iHeart Teachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10787349087348248194noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564479439412885173.post-4981493572711168002014-08-26T22:56:00.001-04:002014-09-07T22:48:42.117-04:00First Day of Kindergarten....Here I Come!!<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Tomorrow is the first official day of the school year! For me, this time of year is bittersweet....it is sad to see summer go, but I'm excited to meet a new group of students and begin a new school year! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Below is my "First Day of Kindergarten" sign that I have each child hold up while I take their picture. I have them stand in front of a measurement poster that I got from Lakeshore Learning to show how tall they are. At the end of the year, I take another picture of them in front of the poster. I like showing this to parents. It is amazing to see how much they have grown! My students last year grew 1 foot!!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I also made bags with materials for new students that I may get this year. Every year I tell myself to do this, but I never do. Then, I am sorry later when I am trying to think of all the materials I need for the new student. I know I will be thankful I did this!!</span><br />
